Eight Wheels
As of today, we'd like to welcome a new car into the household. And no, we're not referring to the SUV Graco stroller that we just bought over the weekend. We're referring to a 1995 [BC] grey-indigo Camry that Grandma and Opa no longer need, given their new Camry Hybrid. This exchange could not have come at a better time, given that our 1993 [Ontario] Corolla is near its end with parts rusting away at a rate of ~$2000/8mo. In fact, we're refusing to undergo the latest $1800 estimate to fix a hole in the exhaust pipe at the engine. The plan is to drive the Corolla into the ground, meaning we'll actually achieve the label of two-car family for a time. Yet another modification, alluded to in the previous post, from our normal behaviour.
If you were listening to CBC Radio One's Definitely Not the Opera show a couple weekends ago (all about pop culture and cars), you'll have heard the announcer refer to an "enzyme" that first-time pregnant women produce that causes them to decide that their offspring will not ride in their present car, and that they therefore must buy a replacement. Wonder if there are statistics to back that up. Ourselves not included, we certainly know of at least two couples this applies to...
Anyway, this temporary dual car situation will help Mom control glucose levels, fatigue, and swollen ankles a lot better. This way, she can be at work only for the 6 hours per week she teaches. No further longing for an office couch.

Hmmm...
The whole car replacement enzyme thing applies to us - did we count in the two? (and yes, Clare fits nicely in the 2005 (Ontario) Toyota Matrix)
For the whole (hole) exhaust pipe thing - foil tape! It's a bit university-student-like, but... I have good memories of crawling under at least one (Chris Lederer's) car during university days to tape up the exhaust pipe... :-)

Yes, you were included as one of the enzyme couples!
Foil tape, great idea...though it is at the engine (which we just had replaced 1.5 yrs ago) so we're a bit leary to apply a bandaid. In the meantime, we're just a bit louder, but no where near as loud as some of the pickup trucks in the neighbourhood that leave at 5:30am every morning for forestry jobs. We are hoping that is one of the sounds that Bif will learn to sleep through. That and summer motorcycles...
Well, I guess that car replacement enzyme was active in your grandparents too - seems a 4 year old VW beetle with 100,000 miles on it wasn't good enough for a precious little bundle named Hannah, so we went out and bought the first Volvo (1975). Then when uncle Derek came along, it was time to get the Dodge Omni (1978), a decidedly less-successful car purchase.
